Former Honey Birdette workers call out alleged exploitation and harassment

"Spank me if I'm wrong" is recommended sales "banter" in the customer service manifesto, and daily selfies must be sent to managers so they can determine whether their retail workers are exposing three items of branded lingerie.

How to buy lingerie

A man's guide to buying lingerie for your partner.

This is the bras, corsets and sex-toy chain Honey Birdette, where former staff say they were given formal warnings or publicly shamed if they didn't wear heels high enough or lipstick red enough.

It's also where sexual harassment of staff by customers is persistent and widespread, ranging from leering and inappropriate comments to in-store masturbation and stalking.

The fast-growing shopping mall chain, set up in the wake of international brands Victoria's Secret and Agent Provocateur and part-owned by billionaire Brett Blundy, is selling a fantasy of feminist sexual emancipation. But staff say the reality for them is dangerous and exploitative workplace conditions.

Their story comes after revelations in Fairfax Media of the widespread sexual harassment of women by their customers, and the virtual inaction of regulatory authorities.

At Honey Birdette the problem starts, former workers say, with the recruitment process. Candidates are vetted for their looks via video interview or through their Instagram and Facebook profiles.

"They are looking for girls who take lots of photos of themselves and carry themselves in a way that is more exposed to the public; [girls] who are actively seeking that kind of acceptance and who they can mould into their ideal," says Nadelle, one of 10 former employees from three states who have spoken to Fairfax Media.

Once employed, "Honeys" must adhere to a strict uniform policy that includes high heels and skirts (trousers are banned), and items from current lingerie ranges â€" which staff must buy (at a discount). Specific "Hollywood starlet" make-up is also a requirement.

Ex-workers say they spent $150-$200 a week (up to a third of their after-tax income) conforming with the brand's uniform requirements. But handling boxes and climbing ladders to access stock was a daily hazard in the "uniform". One ex-worker said she left after injuring her back moving boxes while wearing a Honey Birdette corset.

A culture of surveillance included the daily selfies, as well as surprise visits and after-hours emails to make sure "Honeys" stayed back after closing, on unpaid time.

It is a culture many former workers say made them stressed and anxious. One said that, once on the way home from work, she had found herself weeping and hyperventilating in the emergency lane.

"I felt constantly watched, constantly on edge," says Alice* who worked for Honey Birdette in regional Queensland.

Alice once posted a photo of herself in a new "set" (bra, knickers, suspender belt and hosiery) to a staff group chat, only to find it in an Australia-wide company email the following week. "I was like, they just posted my boobs on the internet … no one asked me ... that was a bit confronting."

Adding to their vulnerability, many were rostered entire days on their own. Women say they were refused toilet and meal breaks because they were not allowed to close the shop. One says she urinated in an empty rubbish bin in desperation one day, another that she didn't drink, to limit her distress.

"I wouldn't eat for eight hours â€"  a few times I almost fainted," says former staffer Mabel.*

Among every 10 customers, about three were men, one of whom would invariably leer at them, or make sleazy remarks, the ex-workers say. Demeaning and intimidating behaviour was most frightening for those working unaccompanied.

One 19-year-old worked alone for a 6pm-to-6am shift during a pre-Christmas 36-hour shopping centre trading marathon. With other nearby retailers closed, she was "very intimidated" by drink and drug-affected male customers. Others talk of men pestering them with probing and personal comments or using the sex toys in the store to masturbate.

Honey Birdette management had no training in dealing with sexual harassment, the women say, nor formal complaint mechanisms. Managers would respond by advising staff to turn the behaviour into a sales opportunity: "They'd say, 'He's probably shy; just go with it, then they'll buy something'," one former employee, Jess, said.

Jess said she was stalked for almost a year by a customer who sat on a bench outside her store and stared at her day after day, and then found out where she lived. He later showed up near her home.

"I got no sympathy or support from work," Jess said.

When she went to court for a restraining order, Honey Birdette required her to take unpaid leave, and asked her to be as quick as possible because she was the best saleswoman.

The chain had a "Little Black Book" of rules for staff (which includes "Spank me if I'm wrong" among recommended phrases), and the company's sales handbook suggests selling women corsets "for the work Christmas party and have them all wondering where you kept those spectacular goodies hidden all year!"

Numerous women use the word "cult" or "brainwashing" to describe their experiences at the chain. Former managers talk of a revolving door of staff.

Some staff were long-standing customers who say they were initially attracted to working at Honey Birdette for its stated goals of sex-positive and body-positive female power.

"Our Honeys are here to not only empower women but to entertain them," is one of the legends on the company website.

Tori Bellentina, a lingerie collector and blogger, was wooed by managers who had noticed her then-40,000 Instagram followers. But she refused to buy the brand's lingerie, arguing the work uniform should be supplied to workers for free. She also demanded to be paid for the time worked before and after the shop's opening hours, as required by the chain. She was "let go" after four months.

"You say you're empowering women, but you also say I need to tell customers to spank me," says Kate, who worked for the company for two years.

Honey Birdette declined to comment.

On Thursday, a campaign by former workers, co-ordinated by the Young Workers Centre staged protests outside a Melbourne Honey Birdette store. A petition calling on Honey Birdette to cease sexist workplace practices and stop encouraging harassment by customers attracted 5400 signatures towards a target of 6000 in its first week.

Discrimination experts say the allegations of unpaid work, dangerous conditions, bullying and harassment potentially breach the retail workers award and numerous workplace and safety laws.

Lingerie model, 18, selling her virginity says she’s been offered £1.7MILLION by a tycoon and insists she will go ahead despite family’s threat to disown her

PAPA DON'T PREACH

Aleexandra Khefren, 18, from Bucharest, Romania says she has been inundated with offers since publicising planned auction

A TEEN lingerie model planning to sell her virginity to the highest bidder has revealed she has been offered £1.7million by a rich businessman.

Aleexandra Khefren, 18, from Bucharest, Romania, said she has been inundated with offers since first publicising her plan.

And the aspiring model has insisted that she intends to go through with her idea â€" despite threats from her family to disown her if she did.

The sordid auction is being organised by German escort agency Cinderella Escorts, which is reportedly taking a 20 per cent cut of the final selling price.

The company â€" which posted a series of shots of the teenager posing in lacy underwear online â€" said: “The date takes place in Germany. The buyer can choose a hotel here, where Aleexandra will visit him for a night.”

The agency originally set the asking price at 1million euros (£850,000).

But after mounting publicity surrounding the auction, Aleexandra â€" whose real name is Oana Raducu â€" claims to have been offered up to 2million euros (£1.7million).

And the teen says she and Cinderella are hopeful that even bigger offers will come rolling in before February, when she plans to finally lose her virginity â€" although she says money will not be the only factor in choosing a suitor.

“We will go to a hotel in Germany, have dinner and then it will happen,” said Aleexandra, according to the Daily Mail.

“I am very curious about how sex is. I have not experimented. I don’t know what is it (sic).”

The teen said she is determined to go through with her plan, regardless of what her family think.

Her dad Toni, a riot cop, and mum Elena, a pharmacist, have reportedly promised to cut her off if she goes ahead with the auction.

Her uncle Radu Raducu told the Mail: “They have begged her not to do it, but she told them ‘I’m 18 and I can do what I like with my body.’

“They have threatened her and said if she goes ahead with selling herself they will not consider her their daughter any more. It is a terrible situation.”

The case first came into the public eye in the UK after Aleexandra appeared on This Morning to discuss her plan to sell her virginity.

She told presenters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield she needed to raise the money stop her struggling parents being evicted and to pay for university fees.

But it has since emerged that the teen’s parents are relatively well off, earning salaries that are comfortably above the average wages in Romania.

And Radu previously confirmed he had no knowledge that his brother and her wife were in financial trouble.

Toni and Elena Raducu have not commented to the press on their daughter’s plan.

Lingerie exhibit reflects sensuality and women's emancipation

Apart from defining and highlighting the feminine form with sheerness and lace, lingerie over the past century-and-a-half has reflected the social progress of women, who are now much more independent and self-confident.

The "French Lingerie" exhibition starting Wednesday in Miami Beach will feature hundreds of ladies' undergarments, providing evidence that once liberated, literally, from the corsets that constrained them up until the 20th century, women are now using undergarments as an end in themselves and in unanticipated ways.

Up until the late 1980s, women generally selected their lingerie to please their partners, but since then they have grown in self-confidence, acquiring their own autonomy and selecting their lingerie for themselves, the curator of the exposition, Catherine Ormen, told EFE.

During a tour of the exhibit, with pieces ranging from burlesque to minimalist and made of modern fabrics along with the classic cotton and satin, the French fashion historian said that the advances in lingerie doubtless are a reflection of women's "emancipation."

Through the evolving styles of women's undergarments, the exhibition reveals that - quite apart from their original function of providing covering and better hygiene - women are now taking advantage of lingerie to model their figures, but above all to reaffirm them.

Ormen says that the exhibit - which is being held simultaneously with the huge Art Basel Miami Beach art fair opening on Thursday - is a mirror of the "history of femininity," especially the changes in women's morphology and image.

"French Lingerie" will run until Dec. 6 in the public spaces of the Sagamore Hotel, one of the pearls of Miami Beach's Art Deco district, and Ormen went into the archives of 11 prestigious French lingerie brands such as Aubade, Barbara and Lou to select the "treasures" on display.

Along with corsets, brassieres, bodices, garters, thongs and panties, the exposition also features works of art in seduction and eroticism by contemporary artists, including French comic artist Annie Goetzinger, drawings by Margot Van Huijkelon of The Netherlands and Japanese fashion photographs by Yoichiro Sato, among others.

Why Can't Victoria's Secret Stop Designing Racist Lingerie?

Victoria's Secret taped its annual fashion show on Wednesday in Paris, and as is customary, the creatives behind the production bundled looks together by theme. Models dressed in costumes fit for segments called "Dark Angel," "Secret Angel," and "Bright Night Angels" stomped down the runway at the Grand Palais showing off the sculpted results of their life's work and "naturally" enhanced hair.

The segment that opened the show was less Angel-forward, more "It's a Small World." You had all the heavy-hitters â€" Adriana Lima, Joan Smalls, Kendall Jenner, and Gigi Hadid â€" wearing the purple and teal lace lingerie that Victoria's Secret is ostensibly selling during its multi-million-dollar televised panty parade. Lady Gaga was singing. The catwalk was gold and glittery.

But look closer and you'll see that the golden glitter path is paved with unfortunate intentions.

Getty

Called "The Road Ahead," the segment featured costumes that were supposedly inspired by what you might call multi-culturalism. "This was the geography bit," according to the Telegraph's report, "a kind of round-the world trip courtesy of countless pom-poms and meters-upon-meters of fringing. American model Taylor Hill donned a rather beautiful Chinoiserie printed robe while Liu Wen, one of the four Chinese models cast in the show, jangled with pom-poms. Given the global appeal of the show, it seemed like a fitting way to begin."

Arpana Rayamajhi, a Nepalese jewelry designer based in New York City, described the theme this way: She said, "The idea is that you're blending little bits of this and that from all cultures around the world." Rayamajhi created much of the handmade jewelry for the segment; the jewelry included silk threads turned into tassels, coins from Nepal, and beads â€" "a huge part of my culture."

Getty

At a model fitting with Lais Ribeiro, other Victoria's Secret artisans told AOL that making the costume in question involved using "strips of culture." AOL explained that the panels were "truly worldly â€" inspired by the likes of Peruvian, Mexican, and Chinese design."

While Martha Hunt, in another behind-the-scenes video with Vogue, said that her look was "like Pocahontas meets Jasmine and they're going bull-riding."

Indeed, so many "bits of this and that."

None of that even sounds nice, but if it does, don't let yourself be hoodwinked by Victoria's Secret's brazen attempt to re-label what is clearly cultural appropriation by turning it into a celebration of "culture." The brand and its creative leads shamelessly cherry-picked imagery, breaking apart aesthetic references from wherever they wanted and stitching them back together again. They're telling us it's worldliness. It's not, it's a hack job.

Collection creative director Sophia Neophitou described the hand-painted fabrics used in this segment by saying, "It's meant to be this naive, homespun ... but this is so luxurious."

It doesn't get much more patronizing than that, does it? The original version is made by simple people ("naive") who make crafts ("homespun"), and it's Victoria's Secret that can elevate the primitive to something more "luxurious." What would be the point of the corporation's untold resources and unparalleled knowledge of world cultures if it couldn't do that?

Stripping of cultures aside, the emblems that stood out most were the ones that came from Asia â€" specifically China. The dragon that Elsa Hosk wore wrapped around her body, the embroidered stiletto boots seen on Adriana Lima, the tail made of flames worn by Kendall Jenner. There's a lot of talk of China as a dominant world power of the 21st century, and the U.S. government, Hollywood, and now Victoria's Secret, it seems, are pivoting to face a new reality. But the Orientalism on display here doesn't show an understanding or an attempt at dialogue. It doesn't close any gaps. What condescension, for Victoria's Secret to think that by wrapping a model in a dragon, it could connect directly with a new consumer in China.

With its positive, pre-emptive spin about globalization and multi-culturalism, Victoria's Secret seems to have anticipated my response. The brand is leading with the notion that we're all members of the human race, therefore everything belongs to everyone. But this is exceptional disingenuousness coming from a brand that once put Karlie Kloss in a Native American war bonnet and leopard print underwear. The fact is that even as the world gets more connected, a sexist, patriarchal, mostly white corporation continues to take what it wants for its own gain. Its exploitation of these cultural references is meant to lead directly to profits. And I'm not buying it.
