'Cosmo' calls Victoria's Secret lingerie

Social Justice Warriors received blowback after claiming that everything is racist. This time, the Victoria Secret Fashion Show has invoked cultural appropriation.

On Wednesday, Helin Jung wrote in Cosmopolitan Magazine that Victoria’s Secret lingerie featured in the fashion show was racist. After a series of criticism from the internet, the article was pulled from the women’s magazine.

The theme of the fashion show was intended to celebrate cultures from around the world, but that’s now how Jung took it.

“(The Victoria’s Secret show was a) brazen attempt to re-label what is clearly cultural appropriation,” said the Cosmopolitan writer.

Jung continued by slamming the company for over glamorizing native cultures and benefitting from their unique cultures, despite the fact that most people who work for Victoria’s Secret are white.

“The fact is that even as the world gets more connected, a sexist, patriarchal, mostly white corporation continues to take what it wants for its own gain,” she continued. “Thongs that don’t have cultural references.”

It’s unclear if Victoria’s Secret, which advertises in Cosmopolitan, complained about the article or threatened to pull funds or access to their future fashion shows.

Either way, it’s about time that a social justice warrior’s search for racism for was shut down.

But even after the VS show ended, Irina continued to blow fans away with her post-runway look, and we seriously couldn’t get enough! The brunette beauty, who’s been romantically linked to Bradley since May 2015, stepped out in fierce thigh-high black boots and a bust-enhancing slinky striped slip dress. Her frock of choice, which was much more conservative compared to some of her fellow models’, featured horizontal black and white stripes, thick straps, and lace detailing.

And while the cat was already out of the bag after the model’s stint on the runway, Irina may have been trying to conceal her early pregnancy with her flowy dress. Either way though, her bump was definitely visible and she definitely was glowing! During the show, Irina tried to remain concealed as much as possible as she sported a trench coat over one lingerie look and a fringe robe other another.

Apparently the Victoria’s Secret angel is “so excited” about becoming a mom, according to E! News, and we are so excited FOR her and Bradley! After all, the two are reportedly head-over-heels in love and get along very well together. We can’t wait to see more of Irina’s fabulous maternity looks in the near future!

“There’s a lot of talk of China as a dominant world power of the 21st century, and the U.S. government, Hollywood, and now Victoria’s Secret, it seems, are pivoting to face a new reality,” the writer continued. “But the Orientalism on display here doesn’t show an understanding or an attempt at dialogue. It doesn’t close any gaps. What condescension, for Victoria’s Secret to think that by wrapping a model in a dragon, it could connect directly with a new consumer in China.”

The author added that “hoodwinked” individuals consider the pageantry innocuous.

“The brand and its creative leads shamelessly cherry-picked imagery, breaking apart aesthetic references from wherever they wanted and stitching them back together again. They’re telling us its worldliness. It’s not, it’s a hack job,” the writer said.

Lingerie-Clad Kim Kardashian Stares Into Our Souls In Dreamy Love Advent Video

Love magazine is here to gift us with a much-anticipated Kim Kardashian appearance, just in time for Christmas. 

The 36-year-old stars in the fashion magazine’s latest advent calendar video, counting down to Dec. 25, sporting some lacy lingerie and a giant fur coat. The video, directed by James Lima, sees Kardashian maintaining some serious eye contact with the camera, almost as if she’s staring into our souls. All the while, the northern lights glow in the sky behind her, giving the video an ethereal vibe. 

And just to make sure we all remember this video is for the holidays, the words “Peace on Earth” flash on the screen at the end. 

The video marks one of the first times we’ve seen Kardashian glammed up since she was robbed at gunpoint in Paris in October. It should be noted, however, the video was likely filmed >before the reality star’s terrifying ordeal took place, so don’t go expecting to see her back on Instagram just yet. 

The mother of two has kept a low profile since the robbery. She’s continued to stay out of the public eye, save for a few sightings, especially after her husband, Kanye West, was hospitalized in Los Angeles last month.

RACIST LINGERIE? Cosmopolitan Criticizes Victoria's Secret

Cosmopolitan writer Helin Jung wrote that Victoria’s Secret has developed racist lingerie for its annual fashion show. Yes, apparently lingerie can be racist:

None of that even sounds nice, but if it does, don’t let yourself be hoodwinked by Victoria’s Secret’s brazen attempt to re-label what is clearly cultural appropriation by turning it into a celebration of “culture.” The brand and its creative leads shamelessly cherry-picked imagery, breaking apart aesthetic references from wherever they wanted and stitching them back together again. They’re telling us it’s worldliness. It’s not, it’s a hack job.

As Emily Zanotti at Heat Street points out, when anyone tries to celebrate culture, people will greet it “with charges of bigotry.”

The first segment called “The Road Ahead” wanted to showcase different cultures around the world, featuring items designed from the people the theme wants to celebrate:

Arpana Rayamajhi, a Nepalese jewelry designer based in New York City, described the theme this way: She said, “The idea is that you’re blending little bits of this and that from all cultures around the world.” Rayamajhi created much of the handmade jewelry for the segment; the jewelry included silk threads turned into tassels, coins from Nepal, and beads â€" “a huge part of my culture.”

For some reason, Jung cannot stand this. She also found it disturbing that the company used “strips of culture” in its designs, “inspired by the likes of Peruvian, Mexican, and Chinese design.” Jung continued:

Collection creative director Sophia Neophitou described the hand-painted fabrics used in this segment by saying, “It’s meant to be this naive, homespun … but this is so luxurious.”

It doesn’t get much more patronizing than that, does it? The original version is made by simple people (“naive”) who make crafts (“homespun”), and it’s Victoria’s Secret that can elevate the primitive to something more “luxurious.” What would be the point of the corporation’s untold resources and unparalleled knowledge of world cultures if it couldn’t do that?

Nope. To Jung, all of this is another way for the Western world to show hatred towards other cultures. It is another way for the Western world to profit off of others.

Look, social justice warriors, you can’t have it both ways. You cannot complain about a lack of diversity or that others do not care about other cultures and then bitch when a company does exactly that:

With its positive, pre-emptive spin about globalization and multi-culturalism, Victoria’s Secret seems to have anticipated my response. The brand is leading with the notion that we’re all members of the human race, therefore everything belongs to everyone. But this is exceptional disingenuousness coming from a brand that once put Karlie Kloss in a Native American war bonnet and leopard print underwear. The fact is that even as the world gets more connected, a sexist, patriarchal, mostly white corporation continues to take what it wants for its own gain. Its exploitation of these cultural references is meant to lead directly to profits. And I’m not buying it.

So where does it stop? It’s a no win situation when it comes to these social justice warriors who want to find fault in everything they see. The warriors complain about a lack of diversity, but when a company decides to make diversity a theme the warriors claim racism.

I admit I had a hard time writing this post because I could hardly find the words to express the weirdness in Jung’s train of thought.

But will the warriors ever learn to take it easy and stop taking everything so seriously?
